According to a new analysis by The Fenway Institute from March 2o, 2014, 27 states asked a sexual orientation question at least once in their Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey from 1995 to 2012. The policy brief calls on state health departments to add sexual orientation questions to their BRFSS surveys. The BRFSS is an annual survey of 500,000 Americans in all 50 states and provides rich data that could have a significant impact on addressing LGBT health disparities.
